Directory inclusion is important because the major directories provide results to many of the major search engines. Directory listings are subject to human review and are therefore viewed as 'more important' by search engines. For example Looksmart provides the directory listings for MSN and these listings appear above the search engine results. Yahoo's directory listings also appear above its search engine results provided by Google.

A good listing in a major directory will generate a lot of focused traffic to your website.
